Modified Barium Swallow

Modified Barium Swallow Study is a dynamic radiologic test done to visualise all phases of swallowing. The study uses a special real-time form of x-ray called fluoroscopy. The patient is given items with different thicknesses and textures mixed in a radio-opaque substance called barium. These items may range from thin barium to barium-coated cookies. The physiologic movements of swallowing are then observed under the fluoroscope, thus drawing interpretations of the underlying swallowing problem.
